I am a settler on unceded land, the Coast Salish Territory of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ nations. Unceded land is land of which Indigenous Title has not been surrendered to the Canadian Government. Most of the province of British Columbia (approx. 900,000 square kilometers) is unceded First Nations Territory.
I honour the ancestry, heritage, and gifts of the Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island and give my thanks to them. The Indigenous mentors and friends I have had have shared with me generously and humbly and they help me live in a good way.
I recognize the ongoing effects of broken treaties, residential schools, Indian hospital, child welfare policy, and other genocidal practices committed by European colonizers.
I commit to supporting Indigenous peoples here and across Turtle Island by continuing my learning of their histories and current realities from their perspectives. I recognize how I have benefited from colonization, and I commit to giving my time, energy, and money to Indigenous artists and organizations, such as IndigiNews, an independent Indigenous-centred media outlet.
