Indigenous Heroes Lesson Plan

Goal

Learners will be able to conduct research and identify Indigenous heroes.,

Learning Objectives

Learning objectives should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-based.

By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify Indigenous leaders.
  2. Find specific information on the web.
  3. Paraphrase and copy and paste information into a condensed format.
  4. Create a post in a Padlet.
  5. Add a photo or video to a Padlet post.
  6. Comment on a Padlet post.

Prior Knowledge & Learner Profile

The learners are in grade five and have been reading nonfiction books about Indigenous leaders for the past month. They have also been doing a unit on online research and summary writing.

  1. Learners will need to know how to type on a keyboard.
    1. Differentiation: learners may also record their voice in the Padlet.
  2.  Learners will need to know how to copy and paste and how to paraphrase and summarize information.
  3. Learners will need to know what the words “Indigenous” and “hero” imply.

Delivery

  1. Read Go Show the World: A Celebration of Indigenous Heroes using a document camera.
  2. After reading, conduct a brief class discussion about the book.
  3. Invite students to choose an Indigenous hero to create a short biography on (provide options from the book). Students may also write a biography for an Indigenous hero of their own choosing (e.g., someone that they know personally or someone not featured in the book). Ensure that each student is researching a different person.
  4. Show students this Padlet and explain assignment, reading the example as a class.
  5. Give students devices. Have students connect to Padlet.
  6. Give students time to complete assignment.
  7. If students finish early, ask them to read and comment questions on each of their peers’ biographies. For example, “Where does Wab Kinew live now?” “Does Wab Kinew still make music?” The first student to finish can comment questions on their own biography. These biographies can be expanded on in another lesson (the questions can be answered, a portrait can be drawn, etc.).

Evaluation

  • Earnest participation, completion of information, and interaction with peers can be evaluated by each student’s engagement on the Padlet.
